Martu Woman (Karrie)
2024, Acrylic on Canvas, 85 x 113 cm

Story Behind the Piece:

Karrie was known in her community for her quiet strength and deep connection to her people’s stories. She wove together not just words but threads of history, singing the old songs under a blanket of stars. Her face, lined with paths of resilience, reflected the ever-changing Martu skies and landscapes. It was said that the patterns etched on her were gifts from the spirits of the land, signs of her wisdom and her role as a bridge between generations.

Each line in Karrie’s design told a story: the winding paths her ancestors walked, the rivers that nourished her people, and the shifting sands that carried whispers of survival and love. Her gaze, steady and profound, saw through the veils of time. When she spoke, it was as if the earth herself leaned in to listen.

Karrie’s presence reminded her community that connection isn’t only about holding onto the past but also about nurturing the present and dreaming for the future. The geometric patterns in the painting symbolize the woven fabric of her life—a balance of simplicity and complexity, harmony and strength.
