Story Behind the Piece:
Martu Faces (Big Men) is a deliberate exploration of sensuality, pride, and identity, challenging the boundaries of how Indigenous Australian culture is perceived. Inspired by the powerful themes in Reading Doctors Writing, this piece responds to the troubling history of how Indigenous sexuality was suppressed, distorted, and controlled. Through its vibrant palette and unapologetic expressions, it reclaims a narrative that has often been misunderstood or silenced.
The faces in this painting evoke a quiet yet sensual presence—unafraid, proud, and deeply human. The bold pinks and purples accentuate warmth and connection, while the intricate patterns suggest resilience and a rich, unbroken lineage. These elements invite viewers to rethink ingrained perceptions and embrace the complexity of Indigenous identity.
After all, Indigenous Australians are not the oldest surviving culture on the planet because they rejected their humanity or their sexuality, but because they embraced life in its full, complex beauty. This piece stands as a testament to that truth, offering a subtle but powerful challenge to mainstream conventions.
At 2.2 meters square, the work required immense focus and energy. “It’s not just the size; it’s the emotional weight,” the artist reflects. Martu Faces (Big Men) is more than a painting—it’s an invitation to see, feel, and reconsider.
