Martu Woman (Yini)

Martu Woman (Yini)
2025, Acrylic on Canvas, 57 x 94 cm

Story Behind the Piece:

Yini is a quiet yet powerful presence, a Martu woman whose essence is captured through layers of intricate dot work. The soft curves of her form flow effortlessly, and the balance of black and white dots creates a rhythm that mirrors the cycles of the land. Her gaze is both introspective and observant, reflecting a deep understanding of her connection to country and community.

The gentle pink background envelops her, symbolising care, love, and resilience. It contrasts with the darker tones of her silhouette, emphasising the strength that emerges through adversity. Each dot tells a story of life’s complexities—its joys, challenges, and quiet victories. The swirls along her neck represent the nurturing energy that sustains her spirit and binds her to her ancestors.

In Yini, we see not only a woman but a legacy—of culture, of survival, and of thriving against the odds. Her presence invites reflection and connection, a reminder of the enduring power of identity and place.
