Story Behind the Piece:
Yarrun, the Martu man, stares out from the canvas with the intensity of one who has seen countless summers pass over the red sands of the Western Desert. His face is etched with the wisdom of generations, each line a pathway connecting to stories of the land, the sky, and the Dreamtime. The spirals and patterns surrounding him pulse with energy—symbols of Country and its interconnected spirit.
Yarrun is a firekeeper, a man whose duty it is to care for the land using fire-stick farming. The patterns radiating from his head echo the controlled flames he tends, flames that breathe life into the land, clearing the old to make way for the new. His eyes, deep and shadowed, speak of an intimate knowledge of the desert’s secrets—the waterholes hidden beneath the rocks, the shifting trails of the goanna, and the songs sung to guide the next generation.
This artwork invites the viewer to step into Yarrun’s world, to feel the rhythm of life in the desert and to understand the sacred bond between the Martu people and their Country.
