Desert Surf Club (Series)

The Desert Surf Club, a new series, transforms the stark Martu desert into a scene of jubilant play. With an elevated, imaginative flair, George envisions the Western Desert’s rare floodplains as a surfer’s dream. Sunburnt dingoes, desert fish and birds ride not surfboards but the shimmering “waves” of seasonal claypan lakes. Originality abounds: every creature is adorned with a mischievous twist (sunglasses, colorful patterns) that speaks to the artist’s sense of humor and renewal. The paintings are visually rich… layered with bold strokes, dense dot patterns and a color palette inspired by an imaginary oasis where desert meets the sea. Symbolically, the surf motif hints at community coming together in moments of plenty, while the joyous animals embody resilience. Importantly, Desert Surf Club is firmly rooted in local culture: it recalls the floodwaters around George’s childhood Beyondie Station and the joy those waters bring to wildlife in the desert. Collectors will note the cultural authenticity in every detail, as the artist channels his own upbringing on Beyondie (“stories of resilience, humour, and connection to land”) into these canvases.

As with all of George’s work, this series is represented by Wentworth and Manyung Galleries. Each canvas is one-of-a-kind, original acrylic on canvas, and is available by private enquiry only through Wentworth Galleries (Brisbane & Sydney) and the Manyung Gallery Group (Victoria).
