Dr. Reece George is a contemporary Martu artist whose canvases bridge ancient desert heritage and modern vibrancy1. Raised on his family’s Beyondie Station in Western Australia, George infuses each work with the red earth, ancestral stories and boundless sky of Martu Country. His bold acrylic paintings teem with lively characters… dingoes in sunglasses, cheeky rabbits by the fence-line, and emus full of attitude… all rendered in a warm palette of ochres, blacks and fiery reds1. These compositions “weave Indigenous storytelling with a modern aesthetic1”, marrying meticulous dot-work and texture with joyful humor. Collectors prize George’s art for its genuine cultural grounding and emotional depth: as one biography notes, buyers value his work for its “cultural grounding and joyful appeal”.

Reece George’s oeuvre is organized into three distinctive series, each inviting immersion in a different aspect of Martu Country:

  • Desert Surf Club: A joyful visual oasis where the arid landscape is playfully reimagined as a surf playground. In this series, drought-hardened wildlife come to life amid ephemeral floodwaters… as if riding the rare rains on Beyondie Station’s claypans. George layers bold strokes and rich dot-work to create lush, original scenes: desert fish swimming among muddy ochre waves under a blazing sky, symbolizing renewal and the levity of community. These vibrant paintings echo his memory of the desert after the rain “like a giant sea of colour”.

  • Rabbit Proof Fence: A sophisticated meditation on boundaries, gathering and resilience. The iconic fence that once ran near his home becomes a stage for community and quiet defiance. Here, anthropomorphic characters… notably the cheeky rabbits from his childhood stories… peer through and even perch atop the fence, infusing it with wit and survival instinct. In George’s hands the fence is not a barrier but a gathering place: each rabbit or dingo is a portrait of endurance and cultural joy, a subtle commentary on resistance. These paintings are rendered in shimmering textures and earthy hues, celebrating life’s lighter side even in harsh country1.

  • Martu Faces: A reverent portrait series honoring ancestors and elders. In these canvases, strong Martu figures stare out from layers of dot-work and shadow. Each face… crafted from thousands of tiny dots… carries the quiet dignity of leadership and memory. George describes this work as an exploration of “strength, resilience, and identity through portraiture”. The effect is deeply spiritual: the paint glows with the weight of history, as if every brushstroke were a barefoot step across the warm sand of his homeland. These poetic portraits preserve family legacy and cultural knowledge, making Martu Faces a truly legacy-worthy series.
