Story Behind the Piece:

This one is pure joy.

These dogs are invented, but the feeling behind them is real. Part of what I’m trying to do in works like this is open up a way for people to connect with animals more deeply, through a subject that is familiar to almost everyone, but carries a lot of meaning in Aboriginal life too.

The sunglasses brought in that extra element of desert joy. A bit of attitude, a bit of humour, but still something tender underneath it.

I like that they feel playful without being silly. For me, they hold personality, presence, and a way of seeing animals as more than background. More like company. More like kin.
