Cocky Dreaming

Cocky Dreaming
2024, Acrylic on Canvas, 85 x 113 cm

Story Behind the Piece:

As the first light crept over the desert plains, the ngalku (white cockatoo) perched on the tallest tree, its crest shimmering like the rays of the rising sun. The Martu people whispered that this was no ordinary bird—it was a Ngajur, a spirit guide who bridged the earthly and dream worlds. Every morning, Ngajur sang a song that carried over the dunes and into the hearts of those who listened, awakening the land and its people with a call to remember their stories.

In the dreamtime, the Ngajur carved the patterns of the earth with its wings, creating rivers and hills as it danced through the skies. Its flight paths became the sacred songlines, guiding generations of Martu as they traveled across their ancestral lands. The bird’s feathers bore the markings of its journey—spirals, lines, and circles that told the tales of creation, connection, and renewal.

This painting captures Ngajur in its eternal dance, its form adorned with the intricate lines of song and story. The layered patterns surrounding the cockatoo evoke the vast expanse of the desert, alive with the rhythms of the land and the echoes of the dreaming. Above, the sunlit symbols celebrate the continuity of life and spirit, each shape a reminder of the unity between the seen and the unseen.
