Big Rain Coming, 2026
150 × 150 cm, Acrylic on Canvas
Background
You can feel it before you see it.
Desert storms announce themselves quietly at first. The air thickens. The birds go silent. Even the breeze seems to wait.
Big Rain Coming holds that charged moment when the sky gathers itself and everything below listens.
Storms in Martu Country are never gentle. They arrive with force, reshaping ground and memory. Creeks that were dry by morning run wild by afternoon. The desert shifts, and when the water finally pulls back it leaves behind new circles of life where there had only been heat and dust.
This painting sits in that moment of anticipation, just before the first drop falls.
Progress photos

I left the painting for a week.
At that point I wasn’t sure how to finish it, or even if it should be finished at all. I had simply run out of steam. Getting the painting this far had taken a lot of work.
So I put it aside.
When I came back with fresh eyes, the answer was there. The final layers became clear and the painting could move toward completion.
