Martu Woman (Judy)

Martu Woman (Judy)
2024, Acrylic on Canvas, 85 x 113 cm

Story Behind the Piece:

Judy’s gaze is commanding—steady, reflective, and deeply rooted in the stories of her people. This painting, with its intricate white dots set against a stark black background, creates a striking contrast that mirrors her dual nature: both gentle and unwavering. Each line and pattern etched across her face tells a chapter of survival, resilience, and connection.

Judy was known as a keeper of knowledge, someone who carried the weight of her ancestors’ wisdom while forging paths for the future. The structured patterns on the left side of her face reflect the systems and traditions she upheld, while the flowing textures on the right symbolize her adaptability and openness to change.

This piece is a quiet but powerful reminder that strength lies in understanding where we come from while looking forward to where we are going. Judy’s story invites you to step closer, to see not just her face but the layers of history and possibility it represents.
