Story Behind the Piece:
Kurnti is a portrait of quiet resilience, a woman deeply rooted in her connection to the land and her ancestors. Her face, framed by meticulous lines of dot work, radiates a soft strength, while the interplay of black and white symbolizes the duality of her existence—past and present, tradition and adaptation.
The patterns across her silhouette flow like rivers, symbolizing lifelines that stretch back through generations. Each dot represents a story, a lesson passed down, and her gaze carries the weight of these teachings. Kurnti embodies the Martu way of being: grounded, unshakable, and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature.
The simplicity of the design does not mask its depth. The contours of her face tell of moments of courage and wisdom, while the negative space invites viewers to reflect on their own connection to identity and place. Kurnti is more than a painting; she is a storyteller, a keeper of memory, and a reminder of the strength found in rootedness.
